Top 15 Best Hair Straightening Products and Some Tips and Tricks

Hello, ladies! Have you heard about hair straightening products that can make flat ironing easier and faster and your hair – healthier and shinier? If so, you probably wonder how to choose the best hair straightening cream or gel. And if you haven’t – welcome to my blog, this post is waiting for you!

Table could not be displayed.

I’m Monica, and today I’d like to talk about the best products for straightening curly hair and products to keep hair straight after straightening it with tools like a flat iron. Also, I’ll answer some of the questions I get asked most often – ‘cause what’s the point of writing such a post without giving away some handy tips about straightening curly hair products? And as a stylist, I have quite a few up my sleeve.

Flat ironing is a fast and effective way to have your hair straight. Yet, such styling may still damage hair due to the high temperatures. And that’s the moment when hair straightening products come to the rescue. Many of them can actually protect your locks from heat, nourish and moisturize them.

Also, some hair straightening products for curly hair can be used instead of flat ironing so that your locks get the chance to restore after high temperatures.

I’ve made three top lists of the hair straightening creams, balms, and gels – depending on the hair type. Eager to find the best products for straightening natural hair? Wonder what product to choose for straightening curly black hair? Curious about hair straightening products for men? Then my post is just for you!

Hair Straightening Products – Q&A

Here, I’d like to answer a couple of questions that I get asked most often.

Are these hair straightening products harmful to my locks? What are the safest products to use when straightening hair?

Some of the modern products can even improve your hair condition if used properly. For example, the Argan Hair Leave-in Conditioner Cream that I mentioned before contains natural herbal ingredients that make your hair healthier and nourish it. Or take PHYTO Phytodefrisant Botanical Straightening Balm, for instance, that softens your hair, moisturizes it, and protects fine hair from heat during styling.

So, look into ingredients carefully and follow the instructions when choosing and using products for straightening hair. Be especially cautious if you’re allergic to some components, and don’t use products that contain these ingredients. Always observe the safety procedures.

Overall, straightening hair products is a good complement for a flat iron or other styling tools. Some products make flat ironing noticeably faster and easier, and the result can impress you! But be ready to spend some time finding the one that works for you. Finding African-American hair straightening products may be especially difficult since this hair type is tough to manage.

Why should I use hair straightening products after all?

It’s totally up to you, but as I just said, hair products for straightening hair can significantly improve your experience with a flat iron. Some hair straightening products such as Brazilian Blowout Thermal Straightening Balm make flat ironing faster and easier, giving you the shinier result.

Other products, like L’ANZA Healing Smoother Straightening Balm, protect your locks from heat during styling. Not to mention, they usually have other useful features such as controlling frizz or softening hair.

Most modern flat irons are pretty safe to use, yet heat can still damage your locks. And using hair straightening products can help condition hair, nourish, and moisturize it. Not a bad thing to do to your own hair, right?

How do I treat straightened hair?

First, try to straighten them with minimal damage – choose a straightening tool that works better for you: straightening brush, hot air brush or flat iron; select the right heat level for your hair type, and always use a heat protectant. Try to reduce usage of a blow-dryer and let your hair air dry when it’s possible. When it comes to styling, the less heat is always the better.

Second, use those hair straightening products that nourish your hair, moisturize it, and protect from heat damage. Choose them depending on your hair type. Moisturizing shampoos, hair masques, and argan oil (and other oils) will come in extremely handy, too.

As a Conclusion

Well, I believe this post was at least a bit helpful for you. My top lists are based on my own experience and that of my numerous clients. Also, I always examine hair straightening products reviews before choosing one, and I highly recommend you to do so. I have to admit, some of them may be fake, but in those cases, their authors are to blame.

We’ve talked about 15 hair straightening treatments that I find to be rather effective. Some of them work well for thick Afro-American hair, while others are suitable for normal hair. And there are even various products for men – the fact that many people get stunned to find out 🙂

Finally, let’s discuss what to bear in mind when choosing or using hair straightening creams, balms, waxes and gels.

Choosing

  • Define your hair type, and look for a treatment that is suitable for it;
  • Choose a hair product depending on your concerns – making hair softer, adding shine, moisturizing, etc;
  • Pay attention to the ingredients, especially if you’re allergic to some of them;
  • If you care a lot about nature and animals, look for the products that are cruelty-free and aren’t tested on animals;
  • If you have color-treated, damaged or fragile locks, be especially picky when choosing hair products for straightening curly hair;
  • Read other people’s reviews and ask your friends, relatives, and your stylist for advice.

Using

  • Carefully read the instructions and follow them;
  • Use a product in a well-ventilated area;
  • Always observe the safety procedures;
  • Don’t use too much of treatment so that your hair won’t feel oily or greasy;
  • Some hair straightening products are heat-activated meaning that they will work only in combination with a flat iron, a Headkandy straightening brush or other styling tools;
  • Some products should be applied on damp hair, while others work better on dry hair – find this out before using 🙂

Hair straightening products can be a great help if used properly. They nourish and moisturize your locks, protect them from heat damage, control frizz, make flat ironing easier, and ultimately – help you create a wonderful blowout. And all of that – for quite a reasonable price. At least, in most cases 🙂

When it comes to hair care, there are plenty of options, and that’s not always that great. With so many hair straightening products available on the market, it may be hard to choose the one which will work for you. I guess, sometimes it’s this process of trial and error.

So, ladies, have you ever used any hair straightening products? Which one is your favorite? Do you find them useful at all? Feel free to leave your comments below. I would be glad to read them all!

  1. I was looking for an appropriate hair straightening product for a long time. My hair is naturally wavy and Brazilian Keratin Hair Treatment Set mentioned here is the best option for it. The result after using it is stunning. My hair remains straight for a couple of months or even longer. It also becomes more silky and shiny after applying the products from the set. Strongly recommend to everyone who wants to achieve a long-lasting effect and don’t want to spend hours in front of the mirror every morning.

  2. My locks are very frizzy but after using Anti Frizz straight cream for hair it becomes so beautiful and smooth that I’m totally satisfied with my hairstyle. No difficulties at all while using it – you just need to apply some cream on your wet locks and the result will please you a lot. I couldn’t even imagine that just an ordinary cream for hair straight styling will help me out. I tried a lot of remedies but my hair is so unruly and thick. That’s why Anti Frizz is a real treasure to me, thanks for recommending it!

  3. Hi everyone! I’m Jessica and I really envy people with straight hair… Seriously. There are significantly fewer products straight hair needs, it also needs more care… But the main thing is that I LIKE straight hairstyles better! It really pisses me off sometimes, girls. Thank’s for sharing such awesome tips, Monica. I’ve already tried BnB straightening balm you’ve described in this article and It’s a cool product, a nice solution for people with frizzy hair.

  4. All that stuff you’ve described here, Monica, is the best hair straighteners products I’ve ever tried! Believe me, I tried a lot of it due to my unruly curly hair… If we are talking about straightening for curly hair, I can say that Brazilian Keratin Hair Treatment Set is the best stuff you’ve described here. When I tried it first it handled with my curly locks perfectly. Even my friend with Afro-curly hair liked it – it worked even with such a coarse hair she has. Another thing I like in your awesome article, Monica, is Garnier Fructis hair straightening permanent cream. I always keep it in my purse. And the smell after using it is so amazing, strongly recommend to everyone, ladies!

  5. My aunt spends a crazy amount of cash on her hairstyle even if her hair’s short, but I must admit that she looks fabulous all the time. Recently I’ve asked her about the best hair straighteners products and she told me that I may pick something from L’ANZA, which is natural, or Garnier, which is a brand with a great history, it’s made of natural ingredients too.

  6. My frizzy hair was difficult to tame and make it look straight and right. I’ve tried some natural recipes for straightening and moisturizing my hair, though the results was unsatisfying and I tried few specialized products for that purpose. Liked them more and I agree that the best straightening cream for frizzy hair is Suave professionals anti-frizz cream. I think that the tube container is more comfortable than a jar, the cream makes my hair silky and smooth, and adds a touch of shine.

  7. Hello, dear Monica. Since my mid-school, it was big trouble to make any hairstyle with my kinky and wild black hair. It was long (and still is) but even everyday routine was a hard task, and I almost cut it down to rid of that daily troubles. Though there was my mom’s friend that appeared one day, visiting our home, just in time to recommend a solution for saving my hair and improving my hairstyle. She told me that I should try “Brazilian Keratin Hair Treatment Set” and indeed, that was the best product to straighten black hair like mine. It requires a lot of preparation and patience though but the result is totally worth it.

  8. Hi there! I think that Suave is the best hair straightening cream in this list. It’s soft, has a nice smell and even a little amount of it works well with frizzy hair. It holds up to my thin hair all day, from the morning to the bedtime, even if there were any activities like running and jumping or even if I’ve ended up caught into the rain — not shower-like, but a light drizzle — straightening cream effect will easily stand against it.

  9. Sometimes I think that nothing can make wild african hair worse than it already is, and nothing can do it better. At least — sometimes.
    So I was searching for the best products for straightening natural afro-american hair and recently came up with a little list to test. B&B Straight Blow Dry Balm is on this list too. I will add few ones from your list too, I think. Thank you.

  10. About best permanent hair straightening products. Among the mentioned products, B&B Straight blow dry balm is one of the best — it can firmly hold hairstyle for a long time in any weather conditions. But it’s a pity that its price is too high. But I tried Bed Head straightening cream, and I like this product — it protects hair, straightens it efficiently, brings softness and shininess. Also, it has a comfortable applicator too. So think twice before buying something expensive. “Expensive” isn’t a synonym for “best.”

  11. Hello, Monica. I’ve tried some hair straightening products and was satisfied with them all in one way or another but I concider L’ANZA as the best straightening balm, it’s my favorite because it’s a very gentle, reasonably priced and economical product. That’s the best, most longlasting product I ever had for now and I’m so happy with its effect.

  12. I can’t say which is the best-of-the-best product ever, but here are mentioned two great examples that I’ve tried on my hair and could’ve recommended to a person who wants to get the best hair straightening. The first one is Argan Hair Leave-in Conditioner Cream and the second one is Matrix Sleek Shampoo & Conditioner.
    Maybe you even should try both of them — that may give you superior effect — cause that’s the most powerful combination I’ve ever tried.

  13. Hi, Monica. Thank you for the review as it may be quiet handy for me. I have crazy african-american hair, and recently, only John Freida Hair Serum could help me to get the best straightening effect I wanted. It’s nice to have some additional options when it comes to naughty hair treatment.

  14. Hello, Monica. I appreciate that you are making so many good reviews, cowering so many topicks about hairstyling! That’s neat. I can add something to PHYTO Phytodefrisant Botanical Straightening Balm review if you please.
    As any phytoproduct, this hair straightening balm works best if a person uses it for a long time. It doesn’t work momentarily and needs some time to accumulate positive effects. But despite this, you will be happy with the results as they stick for longer than other variants and are healthier for your in hair any way you can imagine.

  15. That’s funny, but it’s always so: girls with straight hair eager to curl em, and girls with wavy hair tend to straighten theirs. I’m no exception. I use flat iron frequently, that’s why I need best flat iron cream like John Frieda protective styling creme (it is mentioned in your review, by the way), which works the best for me. I can’t imagine the whole process of hair maintaining without any cream or balm now.

  16. Somehow I was always assured that there’s no easy way to make my curly hair straight. My usual hairstyle can be described as a “noodles factory explosion.” I wasn’t giving a damn until university graduation. I just decided that I have to make something crazy, and making my hair straight seemed the best idea, and no one expected it from me. That was literally the first time I’ve tried any straightening product but I can’t remember what it was. Among all products described here, Argan Hair Leave-in Conditioner Cream seems to be the closest thing to one that I used. And yes, that really was the best decision for me. I’m still happy that tried it and gonna try something else soon.

  17. Hey there, Monica. Can I ask you which is the best cream for hair straightening if I’m an allergic-type person? I can’t say which ingredients in which product could affect me, though I heard that some don’t cause any allergic reaction. My hair is thin, and I’m afraid that I’ll damage it if I won’t be careful enough while straightening it with a hot iron.

  18. Hello, Monica. That’s a very useful post, thank you. I just wanted to inquire what is the best hair straightening product for a black guy. I’m asking for my friend who has a midlength terrible curly hair and I think that he could try a new hairstyle. He keeps refusing to cut his hair so I have to help him get some hairstyling tips, am I right?

  19. Hi, Monica! I’m using JASON Hi-Shine styling gel, for instance, since I saw it the first time at the local store. I had high expectations of it as ingredients in this product are selected well, and my expectations have been justified. I like straightening my hair with hot iron every sunday for a traditional friend-meetup so I need the best product to protect my hair. Though, I didn’t know that it could fit man’s hair. What is the difference between men’s and women’s hair, anyway? Never could get the point of this differentiation.

  20. You should be careful picking Smooth Viking straightening cream because fakes have become almost common thing. I’ve seen a bunch of negative feedbacks that describe creams scent like terrible odor. I know that people have a different sense of smell, but it’s wrong to say that something stinks just because you don’t like it. Though, if it really stinks, then it’s definitely fake, and it would be best to throw the whole jar out — it won’t be able to hold your hair even for a few hours.

  21. Hi there, Monica. Bumble n Bumble stands out in this list for me. I’m using Bb’s tonic lotion, its effect and its smell are just perrrfect. Used hair straightener only twice in my life, but I either used Bb cream too and have no complaints about it — best product for curly hair to make em straight, get shine and smoothness. If someone thinks that there’s something better, then that’s their right — Bb’s best for me, not for them, and it’s normal.

  22. It’s always interesting to see other peoples’ opinions, especially opinions by the pros. I tried Smooth Viking and Argan Leave-in creams and American Crew styling gel on myself. Also, my father used two last ones too and, as I can say, he’s satisfied. I didn’t like Smooth Viking at all because of it’s smell though it works properly with my hair, Argan Leave-in cream is better, but, in my opinion, the best hair straightener product is American Crew styling gel — best fixation and protection for my hair I got from that straightener.

  23. Hello, Monica. Like you said in your review, hairstyling is way more easier with hair straightening products. Also, it’s truly important to use protecting cremes or gels while using a hot iron, especially if we are talking about natural hair. I damaged mine a few times (and it was unpleasantly) until I got a consultation from a stylist, so I started using styling creams at first and after a while – gels too.
    My choice stopped on JASON Flaxseed Hi-Shine. In my opinion, the best products for straightening natural hair are made of natural ingredients or contain a variety of them.

  24. Thanks, Monica. Your review is lovely and reminded me about times when I had to apply an enormous amount of gel to straighten my hair (which was already long at that time). Now It seems funny, but then that was like a disaster! That wasn’t smart of me to use the same waisty product for several months. So, if you used to spend a lot of creme or gel on you, I’d like to advise any person who owns and cherish their long and curly hair to switch their actual straightening product to something more efficient. It’s not the best option to use stuff that is cheap but not matching your hair type.

  25. I tried Suave Professionals anti frizz cream and all the Suave products, actually, and I use only them. The first reason is that I prefer to stick to one brand without any mixing, and the second is that I just liked Suave that much. I could say that Suave anti frizz cream is the best hair straightener cream for curly hair I tried on myself cause I need a small amount of it to get perfect results.

  26. Hello, Monica! Yes, I tried Bed Head recently and liked it very much. I glad I took it on a trip to India cause my curly hair go nuts if they get wet. I took a few different hair straightening products, though the mentioned one was among them. You can’t imagine how damp the air is there. Maybe that was not the best choice of place and time, but then there were two kinds of weather: rain or fog. We stayed indoors on rainy days, though when there was a gap in clouds, we continued the travel. Despite all troubles, including that I caught a disease and was ill for most of the time, that was the best trip in my life with a lot of memories and exiting experience.

  27. Anyone who’s into hairstyling and cares about their hair definitely heard about John Frieda products. I’m using some of them, including Frizz Ease straightening cream, and it’s the best. Fixation is excellent and prevents any curling for a quiet long time indeed, but still, hair stays lightweight and silky.

  28. Hey Monica. Thanks for such an informative article. Your blog is such an inspiration for hair maniacs like me… I’ve been wondering if Suave Professionals Anti-Frizz Cream works on long thick hair… I have very coarse thick hair and I’m not sure which finishing product to purchase. Perhaps, you can provide some recommendations based on your experience with various hair straightener cream products?…

    • Hi Stephanie. You’ve probably read a lot of reviews if you’re asking me about this particular product. The thing is, Suave Professionals Anti-Frizz Cream is great for long and thick hair. As a matter of fact, it makes blow drying sleazy and super fast. And it doesn’t grease up your scalp! A lot of stylists recommend this wonderful hair straightener cream, and I’m not an exception. It’s a game-changer for your hair type. And it’s affordable, too. Highly recommended.

  29. I once had a sample of the PHYTO straightening balm and loved it but unfortunately forgot the name and was unable to purchase more. I’ve now rediscovered it on your blog by complete accident and I’m so excited about it!

    i have curly out-of-control hair that tends to frizz up the very moment I go outside (mainly because of the humidity where I live). What I adore about this product is that it helps me keep my strands from frizzing all day long without weighing them down (oh and boy I have SO MUCH hair haha) I prefer air drying my hair with minimum to no styling. To be honest, the PHYTO straightening balm is the only product that lets me get away with this. It’s a bit on the pricey side, true, but definitely worth the money it costs.

  30. Hey there. Just wanna say that thanks to you I fell in love with Tigi products, they’re among my top favorites these days. Thank you for recommending them on your blog Monica. It was you who introduced me to their awesome hair straightening cream and now I couldn’t be happier. I brush a small amount of Tigi cream through my wet hair, then blow dry and straighten it. It does a great job taming all the frizzies that I have. It’s neither sticky nor heavy on my hair. And it has a fantastic scent, too. This hair straightening cream is definitely worth every penny it costs, and I will buy it again for sure! Thank you for your wonderful blog. Best of luck. Zoe’s Mom.

  31. Hi Monica. Great post, as always. I’m looking for a fantastic hair straightening gel with light to no fragrance. The thing is, I’m very sensitive to fragrances, that’s why this issue is very important to me. Thanks in advance for your reply. Rochelle

    • Hi Rochelle. Thank you for your feedback. If you’re looking for a fragrance-free hair straightening gel, JASON Flaxseed Hi-Shine Styling Gel is what I’d recommend you to opt for. There’s a hint of a natural fragrance that fades within moments. The hold is excellent, and the shine will definitely tickle your fancy. Overall, it’s a great product. Highly recommended.

  32. I love BRAZILIAN BLOWOUT Thermal Straightening Balm because it really helps with my hair. It is easy to apply and I can use it on wet or dry hair. It is also very affordable.

  33. Thank you for sharing your thoughts. I really appreciate your efforts and I will be waiting for your further post thank you once again.
